Previously, I delved into the concepts of 'Energize' and 'Unblock' from Ali Abdaal's 'Feel Good Productivity' book. Now, it's time to focus on the final piece of the puzzle: 'Sustain'.
As an artist, I've always been driven by a relentless pursuit of creativity. However, "sustainable productivity" which Ali has beautifully termed it is key to maintaining a consistent output without compromising on quality.
There have been times when I've pushed myself too hard, only to hit a creative wall. I’ve learned that it's essential to listen to my body and mind. Taking breaks, even short ones, helps me recharge and return to my work with renewed energy.
“Do less so that you can unlock more”.
The next thing is prioritizing stuff. I've found myself juggling writing a blog, editing a video, and drawing on the same day, only to end up feeling overwhelmed and unproductive.
It's about understanding the importance of saying no. I've often felt the pressure to take on every opportunity, but I've learned that quality trumps quantity.
Implementing the 'Energy Investment Portfolio' has been a game-changer. By focusing on a limited number of high-impact tasks, I've been able to avoid burnout and achieve better results.
Ali then speaks of depletion burnout which comes from not giving enough time to rejuvenate. We plan to take a break but we end up doomscrolling on social media which effects our mood and drains our energy.
I am seriously focusing on reducing my screen time consciously. I've experimented with various methods to curb my social media consumption. Initially, I relied on apps that forcefully restricted access. However, I've found that self-discipline is far more effective.
By consciously choosing to limit screen time, I've experienced a significant improvement in focus and overall well-being. It's about developing a mindful relationship with technology, rather than relying on external controls.
The third type of burnout Ali discusses is misalignment burnout. This occurs when our actions don't reflect our core values or long-term goals.
For me, art is a passion, not a profession. While I enjoy it immensely, it's essential to maintain a healthy balance. There have been times when I've treated it like a demanding job, losing sight of the joy it brings.
It's crucial to remember that art is a form of self-expression, not a financial burden.
Monetization is important for sustainability, but it shouldn't overshadow the intrinsic rewards. By aligning my artistic pursuits with my overall life goals, I've found a way to enjoy the process without feeling overwhelmed.
Regular reflection and course correction have been instrumental in maintaining this balance.
Ali Abdaal's "Feel-Good Productivity" has been a guiding light in optimizing my creative process. The book emphasizes the importance of balance, energy management, and alignment between actions and goals.
I've been able to refine my approach to art and productivity. Prioritizing tasks, setting realistic goals, and incorporating regular breaks have been instrumental in sustaining my creative journey.
Ultimately, it's about finding a harmonious blend of passion, discipline, and self-care. By nurturing both my artistic pursuits and overall well-being, I've discovered a more fulfilling and sustainable path forward.
