Finding Your Artistic Identity: Why Focusing on a Specific Medium Matters

Often, artists begin with a specific medium without any knowledge of style or technique. This was the case for me when I started my art journey. I began focusing on graphite and charcoal drawings without knowing anything about style in art and without having any technical knowledge.

My initial works were amateurish, and I didn't have any specific direction or purpose. However, as I progressed, I discovered the concept of realism and began focusing on it. Realism involves capturing the essence of an object or subject in the most accurate and precise manner possible. It requires attention to detail and a keen eye for observation.

As I continued to work on graphite and charcoal drawings, I realized that I wanted to explore other mediums as well. It was a good exposure to try different materials.

For instance, I have worked with color pencils and have created a stunning tiger drawing titles "WHISKERS" that was sold and a horse drawing which I presented as a gift to His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin.

In addition to color pencils, I have also experimented with pastels. I created a series titled "Reminiscence" that explores my past with the UAE and the memorable moments I have shared there.

The softness and richness of pastels have allowed me to create vivid and nostalgic pieces that bring back fond memories.

I have also worked with acrylics and have created a painting for the Standard Group Company that is now displayed on their office wall. The boldness and vibrancy of acrylics have allowed me to create striking pieces that stand out and make a statement.

Exploring other mediums has helped me grow as an artist and expand my creative horizons. Each medium has its unique characteristics and challenges, which have forced me to approach my art in different ways.

However, graphite and charcoal remain my go-to mediums, as they have become a part of my artistic identity.

By combining my skills in graphite and charcoal with my knowledge of other mediums, I can create pieces that are both unique and versatile.

It allows me to push the boundaries of what I can achieve and continue to challenge myself as an artist.

Graphite and charcoal have their unique characteristics that set them apart from other mediums. Graphite is known for its smoothness and precision, while charcoal has a rough texture that allows for a more expressive and dynamic style.

Both mediums are versatile and can be used to create different effects, from light and delicate to bold and dramatic.

I have written an entire blog dedicated to the nature of graphite of charcoal and why I adore them. You should definitely give it a read.

By focusing on graphite and charcoal, I can hone my skills and develop my own style. It allows me to create pieces that are unique to me and distinguishable from other artists.

It also gives me the freedom to experiment with different techniques and approaches without losing sight of my artistic identity.

In conclusion, starting with a specific medium is common for beginners in the world of art. However, it is crucial to explore other mediums to gain exposure and experience.

It is also essential to find a medium that you want to stick to and continue with, as it will help you develop your style and create a body of work that is recognizable and unique to you. For the near future, I plan on sticking to graphite and charcoal, although I might switch to another medium going further down the road.

Because remember, art is all about challenging yourself and trying something new, while enjoying yourself, or it will get boring just like any other career, if you keep on doing the same thing over and over again.
